User Interfaces and Safety for Embedded Systems

CORBA

My article on CORBA for Embedded Systems appears in the October 1998 issue of Embedded Systems Programing.

The CORBA specification is defined by the OMG, and working groups within the OMG focus on certain areas. The The OMG's Real-Time Platform Special Interest Group's homepage is at http://www.omg.org/realtime.

The following vendors sell ORBs for embedded systems:

  • Iona Technologies sell Orbix for VxWorks and QNX.
  • Highlander Communications sell the Visigenics ORB which is sold by Inprise for desktop platforms.
  • Nortel sell RCP-ORB (yes that is RCP, not RPC !).
  • Lockheed Martin Federal Systems sell an ORB called HARDpack.
  • Expersoft sell the CorbaPlus ORB.

The TAO ORB is a free ORB which has been used for much research into real-time and deterministic behaviour of ORBs.
